It's been a while since I posted anything! Tonight when I went out to eat with some friends, including my room mate Rosemary, we were doodling a bit in a sketch book.

After she graffiti-ed a sketch I did of a super dumb looking Megaman to look like her character Dennis, I sketched out the man himself. I liked the sketch enough to finish it when I got home.

Abandoned April Fools Stuff

Well, I was going to go all out this year and try spreading some April fools content, but I just didn't have the time to do everything I wanted. So here are the only two images I got close to finished.

I was going to spread some fake screenshots of Silent Hill 2 as a DS game, in the same vein as the Castlevania titles. (vampire pun!)

I didn't get to do the health.ammo hub to the quality I wanted, or the text boxes for dialogue. Both images would have been tweaked to look more legit.
Also planned were images of a boss fight, screens of the hell-world, and an inventory screen.

Oh well. Enjoy. (the images are viewable as a "small" screen, based on a stats for the DS I read somewhere. The second images are the big versions for detail reasons.)

Sick Day Sketchings

Man, A cold snuck up and kinda knocked me for a loop.

So instead of working, which I really should be, I've been sleeping. When I'm awake though, I've been sketching.

I got this nice brush pen at the book store. I've never used one, but I've seen friends and people in class use it, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I'm in love with it.

Everything is so loose with it. Even when I draw things like armor with it, it's very flowing and organic. Which I think is kind of cool. Makes me feel like Amano, too, which is even cooler for a nerd.

No, I have not given up on illustration. Right now I just don't have anything to post illustrator-y.

In the meantime, here is another photoset of a craft I did.
Last Halloween, I really wanted to make a cool costume to go to the downtown in, but I didn't want to spend a fortune. So I decided to make a mask and just wear a suit.

This gave me the idea to go as Frank West from Dead Rising. He can wear just about anything, and as long as he has a camera and probably a sword/club/chainsaw, he's still Frank West. So I decided to make the Kobun masks you can find in a toy store in the game.

So here we go.
The mask is made of insulation foam board, glue, acrylic paint, mesh, and a dollarama hat.

First I bought a sheet of insulation board, which cost me about 10 dollars.

I measured it off into sections.

Then traced out the top of the helmet using an embroidery hoop I found.

The sections were cut out.

And Glued to the top, mitered when necessary.

I sanded as I went along.

And cut and sanded out the top cap to make that silver bump the kobuns have on top of their heads.

Once the helmet was fully together, I drew on the face, sanded, filled, and sanded and filled....and sanded and filled. You get the point. This was to make it as rounded as possible.

I glued in the hat for stability.

Finished the paint job and cut out the eyes.

Then I put laundry mesh over the eyes, used paint to secure it to the mask and camouflage it, then sealed the entire mask with string gel.

It was fun to do. Most people thought I was a legoman in a business suit. I think a few nerds picked me out as at least a kobun headed guy though.

Well, Yien's birthday was a while back, but we didn't have a party until today.

As a present, Rosemary and I decided to make her a Coraline rag doll. (She said she'd love one after we saw the movie.)

So, here are the results.

First off, we didn't follow the design of the doll in the movie. We liked the Jeans look more than the black skirt and stripey socks that were on the official dolls.

Rose and I kind of batted the doll back and forth when we worked on it. She would sew, I would sculpt. So most of the sculpted work is mine. When we did the face, it got cooked for far too long under way too hot of a setting. It turned black and took about 10 coats of gesso to get it ready for painting.

In particular, I was happy with the boots. I had no idea what I was doing here, but it all seemed to come together in the end.

The coat posed some problems. It wasn't something that we thought we could do totally guide free, but neither of us knew how to make a pattern with a hood. Rose did some tweaking though and made the hood look like it really belonged on there.

The barrette was a bit of trouble. I sculpted it way too thick, and didn't have the sculpey to make a new one. I ended up sawing the original in half with an olfa blade.

So considering Rose and I had no clue what we were doing, I think we did pretty good.
If we were to do it again, there are things I'd do differently, mostly with the face and head, but all in all, I think it was a success.

Plus, Yien loves it. That was an important factor.

So, I looked through my sketchbooks and decided a long post was in order.

so, here we go.

First off, this is a sketch for a future painting. I drew up these characters to make them part of an RPG I'd been thinking about, but I shifted it over into a new direction. These two just kind of got scrapped, now I use them for personal work.

And now, the gentleman octopus. Yep. Was going to submit this as a t-shirt design back in September, but there was apparently too many tentacle based designs, so I didn't finish it.

Another future painting plan. I just need to find the right canvas.

This was another character for the RPG I was thinking of. The very VERY initial stage of a blacksmith guy. I decided later on to make him a scrawny old guy.

The three little pigs. Done for my first semester interp class, where I revised fairy tales into videogames.

And now, some anime.

The rest of these images are from my current semester project. The Victoria project, where I take the usual RPG tropes and place them into a co-operative action game instead.

Well, not me. Look at my fancy new website! Most of the labor was donated by the very knowledgeable Bryan McNeil, who did a great job putting the site together, and putting up with the crap I nagged him with. The site isn't done, but it's functioning. Tweaking over the next while should finalize it.

The site is mainly intended for my portfolio, so lots of stuff will still be filtering through the blog. However, if anyone feels like taking a look, you should.

Judo Panda, Throw!

So, Kim, Karen, and Yien decided to expose me to this insane movie last night. It was starring the members of some Korean boy band in EVERY main role. (There was like 13 of these guys!)

One of them had to play a panda, in this really unconvincing panda suit. I thought he was supposed to be dressed as a mascot for the school Judo team, but apparently, as far as the movie was concerned, he was a real panda.

Which got me thinking. Wouldn't it be awesome if the panda knew judo?
So I started sketching and ended up with this. I'm iffy on the bamboo, but I had a bamboo brush set that I decided to try. I think I'll paint my own and put it in another time.

So, I leaned the costume more toward acrobatics than intimidation, and put in a slightly altered color scheme and emblem!

So Rosemary and I decided last month that we were going to do an art trade, and since we're both gamer nerds we went with game characters we like. So, I drew Lucas and Ness from the Earthbound/Mother series.

Rose did this CRAZY picture of Crono from Chrono Trigger. See how crazy it is! The gouache on it is so flat that I thought it was a print until she told me otherwise.

I totally ordered a pin from Rosemary Travale

She did it quite fast too. I'm not all THAT narcissistic (though I think I have excellent taste in pants.) but the idea that she could make a pin for someone that looked like them, and then all the weirdness of having conversations with people while wearing a pin of your own face was just too awesome to pass up, so I got myself one.

Also! You can buy pins similar to this, but not of me, and not custom, on her Etsy shop. The characters are great. I like Pink D'Artagnan. It takes a real man to have pink facial hair.

Another project for one of my classes. I'm really enjoying myself now that I don't have instructors telling me that I won't succeed without item synthesis, or the ability to be conceptual rather than narrative, or that characters will not get me business. It also makes me feel less like crap, so work I like happens more.

Royal Winter Fair

What did I learn? Farm animals are smelly, but not so smelly that thousands of people wouldn't want to be in a room with them to take photos and win prizes.

Also, as cute as they are, it's not that much of a moral dilemma to go get a burger after seeing how sad a cow looks.

I wouldn't mind going back if I have the chance next year. Man that place was crammed full of sheep.

Red Cross

Another image I'm pretty happy with. This time it's a bit more uplifting than my writhing pile of people. We were doing a project about social awareness, and I chose the Red Cross as my starting point.
I don't know why, but I really like the linework in it. Next, I moved on to my new coloring style. Flats and textures.
I wanted to make the crosses stand out more, though, so I tinkered around with the file and ended up with something a bit more arty.
I think I'll make one more version where the desaturated area gradiates up to color toward the blue sky, but keep all the red's bright again.

School is crazy busy during fourth year.

Anyway, let's get some pictures posted, hm?

Umm... you might need to click on them. They went weird.

First off, an image from I think my favorite class of all time. I really enjoyed the linework for this, and I think it's the closest thing I've ever drawn to being explicit.
The colors were fun too. This is actually how I'll be doing any editoral style work from now on. I hide my linework too much, and I'm told it's what I'm good at. Peer pressure worked, guys.

Also, I'll be using textures more. I'm slowly building a collection of them.
Lastly, something for my own personal stuff. I've learned that a huge part of digital painting is appropriate use of textures, and matte painting. You'll get to see that later.

A new illustration I did for kicks. As a confession, I have to say, I'm addicted to drawing tactical RPG style characters. Weirdly, it was a style I drew in for class that wasn't considered too niche market. In one of my final portfolio reviews, I was told it could net me some work, which kind of baffled me.

I still need to learn how to scan watercolors decently though.

Another week, another challenge. A bit early this time because my co-op looks poised to keep me busy.

Anyway, the theme was "a band" of any type, so I went with a rock band. You know, one time, one of my instructors looked through my sketchbook and asked me if I felt I was an overly enthusiastic person. I wonder where he got that impression.

And of course, Kim's shot for the week. A band for the working man if I ever saw one.

This weeks challenge is an abandoned building.

This week's theme was Modernized Mythical Characters. I did the Monkey King. I draw him a lot, probably cause when I was younger and was home sick from school, there was a cartoon on TV about him from time to time. I'm pretty sure it was one of the first anime I ever saw.

That and Pochacco.

Kim posted her challenge picture today, and it's pretty great. She went all traditional. He's a PAN handler... Pan Flutist..... Pan... well, you get the point.

Challenge No. 4: MST3K titles.

This week's challenge was picked by Kim. We had to choose from a set of titles from the TV show "Mystery Science Theater 3000". It's pretty much a show where a bunch of guys sit around and make fun of old B movies (which you watch while they rip on it). With little bits of a plot in the intermissions.

It's got some gold titles though. Like "DANGER: Death Ray!" and "Secret Agent Super Dragon". I chose the episode titled "Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy". It started out with realistic sketches of a robot and a mummy, but over time turned into this luchador poster. I think that's because I found a newer movie where a mexican wrestler beats up an Aztec Mummy...

Anyway, it's pictures like this that make people ask why I'm not in animation. My answer remains "drawing the same thing 24 times for one second of motion is not appealing."

Kim's post for the week is pretty snazzy too. I like the lighting she did... check it out over at her interblog.

Forgot this place for a little while.

Well, I just finished my first week of co-op work... it was a week-ish, or so, I think.

Anyway, there will be more art posted this week. Wednesday will mark the final day of a challenge I have with Kim Sokol. (She's in my links, go look at her stuff.)

Kim and I are both working; as well as living together this summer, on a set of kids travel guides, where we use a prescribed style to work in. Worrying that we wouldn't get enough portfolio pics from it, since the style is an animators style and not exactly what we both usually do, we decided that every week,we'll make an art challenge to create portfolio pieces.

This weeks theme is demon/devil girls.

Getting down and drawing something sexy after drawing so many cute fuzzy animals this week though made me hope that no kid ever googles my name after reading the travel book.

Airport doodle!

K, so I was bored on the airplane, and there was a guy talking really loudly and obnoxiously on his cell phone before we started taxiing. I kid you not, he actually shouted something about a person he knew who was "A complete ------- conformist."

At that point I looked up at who it was shouting, and there was this guy stuffing his suitcase into the overhead compartment. I thought his conformist thing was pretty hilarious considering how he was dressed.

And now I go off on a tangent:

I never really used to see guys dressed like that except occasionally when I was in Toronto, but somehow this type of clothing has become like a super-trend back in N.S. Any time a guy in his teens walked by me down there, he was almost always (9 times out of 10) dressed like this. How is it possible that people can look THIS ridiculous and other people will still want to adpot it? I think in 15-20 years, super skinny stretch jeans will be giving 30-something year olds embarrassing flashbacks. Kind of like the flock of seagulls haircut did to teens from the 80's, or guys who went to prom in Powder Blue Tuxes in the 70's.

During the past couple of months, my parents were remodeling our house. After staying pretty much the same since it was built in the 70's, except for some occasional coats of a slightly tinted white paint, they decided to go all out and pull up all the old carpets, parquet floor, and paint the walls a color you could actually notice. On top of that, they needed new art for the walls because the old stuff that was hanging didn't really belong any more.

So now they have two of my paintings up. This was kind a fun project for me. It's not one of the color schemes I'd usually use. Never been a fan of painting in browns. I also got to mess around with patterns and silver paint.

What surprised me most though is that these have actually been framed and hung up in a room where people will actually see them. Usually my stuff is put up on a ledge in the basement where only the family sees any of it.

And yeah, I'm aware I can't take decent photos. If anyone has tips on that kind of thing, they'd be appreciated.

Hey everyone.

I figured that eventually, I would need to start a blog for my illustration work, and I'm currently on vacation. So, what better time is there to start blogging, right?

From now on, when I get the chance, I'll upload my sketches and final pieces. Show my work process, and all that other stuff that people who draw for money do.

Now if I can start earning the money to go along with it, I just might be set.
